She cranes named Uganda Tourism Ambassadors

KAMPALA: The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) has named the female National Netball team She-Cranes as Uganda’s official tourism brand Ambassador.

The She Cranes are set to represent Uganda in the Netball World Cup in Autralia.

Vincent Mugaba, Head of Public Relations at UTB said “We want to use the already stunning image of the She-Cranes to promote the visibility of Uganda’s tourism locally and internationally.”

Mugaba said Tourism is not just an aspect of wildlife but a combination of culture, heritage, conferences, visits, shopping, sports to mention but a few.

Mugaba said there are plans to integrate all aspects of tourism in order to spur growth within the sector. This explains why they chose the She-Cranes as Uganda’s official tourism brand Ambassador.

He lined up a series of activities, events, trade shows and exhibitions in the month of August and in other subsequent months of the Calendar year.

Mugaba said they have organized a mountain gorilla cycling challenge scheduled to take place on 17th August in Fort Portal and Kabale Areas where a large number of participants are expected to come from Europe.

Other activities and marketing events due in August include, the Buganda Tourism Expo scheduled for 28th August at Sheraton hotel, Mountain Gorilla Trade Show on 3rd, August, Miss Tourism Uganda and Marathon in the wild.

The ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities reported last month that the country received 1,266,034 tourists last year, contributing 1.1183m USD, making a total contribution of Ush6.395b which represented 9.9% of the country’s total GDP.

Dr. Maria Mutagamba said the total employment for the tourism sector was 592,500 employees representing 8.6% of total employment  Uganda.
