Press Release: African Birding Expo to host world's bird enthusiasts

KAMPALA, UGANDA – The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) in collaboration with Competitiveness and Enterprise Development Project (CEDP) under the World Bank is launching the inaugural “African Birding Expo (ABE)” on Saturday 4th 2016. The expo, the first of its kind will be held at the Entebbe Botanical Gardens from the 18- 21 November 2016.

“Uganda is recognized as one of Africa’s premier birding destinations with 1000 bird species. About 10% of the world’s total bird variety and more than 50% of Africa’s bird species,” says Mr. Asiimwe Stephen, the CEO of UTB.

“Birders are big spenders. A birding excursion of 17-20 days can earn Uganda $7000 per foreign birder. We are targeting 100,000 birders who will bring in $700 million a year in the next ten years” he added.

This Expo is set to attract the most diverse birders and tourists from in and around the globe who hope to catch a glimpse of the various bird species in the country that may be rare or extinct. These include: the Shoebill, Green-breasted Pitta, African Green Broadbill, Great Blue Turaco and many other rare species.

The ABE also aims at appreciating other Ugandan products like wildlife, geographical, historical and cultural products through promoting this avi-tourism in the Pearl of Africa. Bird clubs and nature lovers are invited to attend the expo and are encouraged to bring as many members as possible.

Games and activities for kids and adults such as bird quizzes, imitations of common bird calls and other forms of entertainment like traditional dances, pre and post Expo tour opportunities of cultural and heritage sites, and a taste of local cuisine will be provided.

Although this event is free, pre-registration is encouraged to help with fore-planning. For more information, and to register for Expo updates, visit www.africanbirdingexpo.com.
