Giraffes On The Move

Uganda Wildlife Authority started the process of translocating 20 giraffes from the northern to the southern sector of Murchison Falls National park.

The Rothschild’s giraffe is one of the growing number of species under threat of extinction through habitat destruction, and the aim of the relocation is to enhance the long-term survival of the species and to restore natural biodiversity. Baker’s Lodge is located is this section of the park where chimpanzee trekking, bird watching and Samuel Baker’s trail to the top of the falls are major draw cards in the luxuriant Budongo Forest.

Uganda hosts the only natural remaining population of close to 1,000 of the 2,500 Rothschild’s giraffes in the world. The rest are in small populations reintroduced in parks in Kidepo Valley and Lake Mburo and in conservancies in Kenya.

We are really looking forward to spotting our new neighbours and welcoming them to their home! Of course a cruise to the foot of the falls, which is an impressive sight, and to the Delta downstream, on one of our boats is a ‘must-do’ when visiting the area.
