air uganda introduces 'crane class' lounge

KAMPALA - HIGH profile people will now find reasons to fly the Kampala-based airline, after the introduction of a Crane class facility aboard its MD model planes.

Air Uganda Country Manager, Lucy Ismail, said this in Dar es Salaam on Friday evening that Crane class is modeled to accommodate high profile personalities who wish to fly business class on normal passenger planes.

"The Crane class is modeled between business and economy classes," Ms Ismail said while introducing the latest innovation of the airline to corporate customers. The Crane class has enough legroom, lounge access and extra baggage.

She noted that Air Uganda (AU) which flies between Entebbe and Dar es Salaam's Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA), will soon start flying to Kilimanjaro International Airport.

"A logical next step for us is to open up Arusha to East Africa and I am delighted to announce that we have started planning for this," Ms Ismail noted. Established over five years ago by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development and other partners, AU has a fleet of CRJ 200 and MD 87 model planes.

Speaking during the same ceremony, a representative from Ugandan High Commission, Kiyingi Robert has called upon governments in the region to lower taxes which contribute in escalating airfares.

"In Europe you can fly for 20, 50 and 100 US dollars but here the same distance charges more than double the prices because of government taxes," noted Mr Kayingi, who said strong regional airlines are an important element to boost integration and tourism.

He underlined the need for EAC member governments to work together to speed up the integration process, while allowing the private sector to complement such efforts through provision of an investment friendly environment. "Successful tourism depends on strong airlines which is what we need in the region," Kiyingi argued.

Air Uganda which was accorded International Air Travel Association (IATA) Operational Safety Audit recently flies to Bujumbura, Kigali, Juba, Mombasa and Nairobi.
